Wireless Coverage as of July 2010

Currently the system will transmit & receive 'B/G' 2.4ghz wireless at up to 54kbps, although we've limited it to 11kbps at the moment. There is also a 5ghz 'N' wireless network which can transfer at up to 150kbps, although this is not currently publicly accessible. As you can see, we need many more access points in order to cover the whole town. We'll add more access points and higher bandwidth as demand grows.

Your Wireless MAC Address

We need your Wireless LAN MAC Address in order to allow you onto the wireless network, it looks something like this: 01:23:45:AB:CD:EF or sometimes like this: 01-23-45-AB-CD-EF

First look for a sticker on your computer that says something like WLAN: 01-23-45-AB-CD-EF. If there are two stickers but they both say LAN... instead of WLAN... then you'll need to assume there is no sticker.

If there's no sticker and it's a Windows computer, open a Command Prompt and type ipconfig /all then press ENTER. Scroll down the list until you find the section 'Ethernet adapter, wireless network connection', the Physical Address is the WLAN Mac address.

On an Apple Mac computer the WLAN Mac address is called the Airport ID which you can get from selecting System Settings > Network > Airport

On an iPhone, iPad or similar go to Settings>General>About and get the Wi-Fi Address.

On many Nokia phones type in *#62209526#

On a Windows Smartphone or Pocket PCs go to Settings > Connections > Wireless LAN > Advanced.

On Android based phones go to Settings > About Phone > Status.

On Blackberry devices go to Options >Status.

Sony Playstation 3 and Playstation Portable (PSP) Select Settings > System Settings >System Information.

Playstation 2 - slimline > Press Triangle button to display the System Information screen.

Microsoft XBOX - Select Main Menu > Settings> Network Settings.

Microsoft XBOX 360 - Select System > Network Settings> Edit Settings > Additional Settings > Advanced Settings > Wireless Information.

Nintendo Wii - Select Wii channel menu Wii Options > Wii Settings > Right Arrow > Internet > Console Information

Signal Quality

You'll need a fairly good signal on your wireless device to get a good connection.

Depending on your computer or device the wireless signal is usually shown as a series of bars similar to a mobile phone signal.

Here are some examples:

If you've only got one or two bars the signal is poor, if you're in a coverage area you might need to move nearer to a window or even open it. Some of the older buildings in Lechlade have very thick walls so a good signal is sometimes difficult if you live in one of them. Please contact us if you need advice on getting a better signal.
